Every guide on Dr Cockatiel mixes two kinds of evidence, and we keep them apart on the page. This page explains both, and the rules we follow when we quote other cockatiel owners.

Health and food safety come from avian sources

Whether a food is safe, what a symptom can mean and when a bird needs a vet are answered from veterinary and published avian sources, not from anecdotes. Owner experience never decides any of these. A bird that ate something risky and seemed fine is luck, not evidence, so we never use a story like that to soften a warning.

Nothing on this site replaces an avian vet who can examine your bird. If a guide says “vet today”, we mean it.

Owner experience: the “What owners report” sections

Some questions are best answered by people who live with cockatiels: how a seed-to-pellet switch actually goes, what pin feathers look like day to day, how a hen behaves when she starts laying. On selected guides we collect that experience into a section marked Owner-reported. When we put one together we:

  • Read public owner communities. We read threads on public cockatiel and parrot owner forums. Each section names the communities it drew on and how many threads we read.
  • Need more than one voice. A point goes in only when several owners describe it independently, in different threads. Each point shows how many owners reported it. One-off stories are left out.
  • Skip noise. We leave out posts from sellers, breeders promoting stock, brand staff and anything that reads as promotion.
  • Record where owners disagree. If experienced owners split on something, we say so rather than picking a side for them.
  • Quote sparingly and link. When an owner says something better than we could, we quote a short passage word for word, credit their username and the community, and link to the original post. We never edit a quote or stitch quotes together. Before a section is published, every quote is checked against the live post.
  • Keep it below the advice. Owner sections sit after the guide itself. Where an owner report touches on health, the section points you back to the vet-first advice above it.

We do not turn owner posts into star ratings or review scores, and quoting a post does not mean we endorse everything else its author has written.
