Quick answer: healthy cockatiel breathing is silent and almost invisible — no tail movement, no sound, beak closed. Birds have no diaphragm. They breathe by moving the sternum and a system of air sacs that runs deep into the body, which makes their respiratory system extraordinarily efficient — and extraordinarily vulnerable. Note the two normal entries. A cockatiel that has just flown laps of the room, or one that’s genuinely hot, may briefly breathe with its beak open. The distinction is recovery: normal panting settles within a couple of minutes of rest. Distress doesn’t.
The emergency that kills fastest: airborne toxins
Before considering infections, rule out your own kitchen. Overheated non-stick cookware (PTFE, sold as Teflon and many other brands) releases fumes that are odourless to humans and lethal to birds — often within minutes, and frequently with no warning signs before collapse. Self-cleaning oven cycles, some space heaters, hair straighteners and air fryers can carry the same coating.
If you suspect fume exposure: get the bird into fresh air immediately, open every window, and call an avian vet on the way. Do not wait to see whether symptoms develop.
Other airborne irritants worth eliminating from a bird household: aerosol sprays, scented candles and plug-ins, incense, cigarette and vape smoke, strong cleaning products, fresh paint, and new carpet fumes. Other common causes
- Bacterial or fungal infection. Aspergillosis, a fungal infection from damp bedding or mouldy food, is a particular risk in birds kept in poorly ventilated or humid conditions.

- Dust and feather debris. Cockatiels are powder-down birds and produce a lot of dust. An occasional dry sneeze is normal; regular sneezing in a dusty, unventilated room is a signal to improve air quality.
What to do right now
- Get fresh air moving and remove any candle, aerosol, smoke or cooking source immediately.
- Keep the bird calm and warm — around 26–29°C (80–85°F), with an escape route from the heat source. Stress alone can tip a struggling bird over.
- Do not restrain or grip the chest. With no diaphragm, a bird held tightly around the body physically cannot breathe. If you must transport, use a small carrier, not your hand.
